Multiverse Mapping Live!

Hello hello, Tom & Corissa here,

Today, a chance to see real strategy consulting right before your eyes.

People are often asking us to see Multiverse Mapping in action.

So a couple of weeks ago, we tried something that we'd never done before. We did a live strategy consulting session for a real person with a real business challenge in front of a real audience.

Strategy with stakes. Mapping with nowhere to hide.

First in the hot seat was Pragati Sinha. (Thanks again, Pragati!)

In this email you'll find the video of the session and the podcast episode that followed.

(Would you like to be in the hot seat? We're looking for volunteer #2 for our next Multiverse Mapping Live session. Just reply to this email.)

The video

Pragati brought her "Proof Sprint" method – an approach that helps companies avoid expensive project disasters. We think it shares some DNA with our work.

Great method, just one problem ... not enough people buying. Which means project disasters that could have been avoided are going ahead.

Why? Let's spoil one of the key moments from the session:

"For me it's a painkiller, but for them it feels like a vitamin."

In short, Pragati discovered she wasn't selling what she thought she was selling.

This is Multiverse Mapping in action, seat-of-the-pants style. We mapped one customer's journey with a business to uncover where the business strategy is most stuck.

A shout out to the audience (Tjada, Harry and others) for chipping in with amazing suggestions.

We've edited the 60-minute-long video down to a crunchy 25 minutes with just the breakthrough moments. You can watch it below.

Key moments:

  • 0:00 - Meet Pragati and her Proof Sprint challenge
  • 3:30 - Four Forces: why people choose (or don't choose) to act
  • 8:30 - The inertia problem: "foundations are already broken"
  • 15:30 - The painkiller vs vitamin revelation
  • 18:30 - Success stories: $200K and $1M project saves
  • 21:30 - The breakthrough: "You offer ..."

The podcast episode

Straight after the Multiverse Mapping Live session finished, had a conversation to debrief about it. We recorded it while wandering through the woods, complete with a crumbling walkway and the occasional navigational hiccough.

This is what strategy work actually looks like. Not the polished case studies, but the real, messy, human process of figuring things out together.

Some stuff we talked about:

  • Tom was sweating bullets the whole time, but thankfully it didn't come across (or did it?).
  • How do we remember to do more of the zooming out? That's when everything clicks!
  • How to "close the game" properly (shout out to Dave Gray).
  • Why some experiments need an overnight digestion period.
  • The challenge of delivering insights on a schedule vs. letting them emerge naturally.
  • How to turn your expertise into live content (even when you're terrified).
  • The difference between safe, prefabricated examples and real-world messiness.
  • Why "interesting things are interesting if you're interested in them" might be our most profound insight yet.
